Local vs. General Anesthesia in Liposuction

If you want to remove stubborn pockets of excess fat in areas such as the thighs, hips, or abdomen, you may be a candidate for liposuction. This extremely popular body contouring procedure can help patients achieve a slimmer, more toned physique with long-lasting (if not permanent) effects. When performed by a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon, the results can dramatically boost self-confidence.
Because liposuction is so widely sought-after, both the techniques and the anesthesia options used during the procedure have continued to evolve. Traditionally, liposuction has been performed under general anesthesia; however, many patients now have the opportunity to undergo liposuction using only local anesthesia. Understanding the key differences between these two approaches can help you make a more informed decision about what’s best for your individual needs.
What Is General Anesthesia?
General anesthesia is a form of deep sedation used during many surgical procedures. It induces a controlled state of unconsciousness and is typically administered intravenously or through a face mask. Patients under general anesthesia are completely asleep and unaware of the procedure as it takes place. Vital signs are monitored and dosages adjusted throughout the surgery to ensure safety and comfort.
General anesthesia is commonly used for longer or more complex liposuction procedures, particularly when multiple areas of the body are being treated or when a large volume of fat is being removed. While it is generally safe, it has been known to occasionally cause side effects, such as post-operative grogginess, nausea, and sore throat.1
What Is Local Anesthesia?
Local anesthesia is designed to numb a targeted area of the body without affecting the patient’s consciousness. In the case of liposuction, a special solution called tumescent fluid is injected into the treatment area. This allows patients to remain awake and comfortable during the procedure.
As such, local anesthesia can be a great option for those who are undergoing treatment in a limited area or seeking a quicker, less intensive recovery process. In fact, a 2021 study analyzing over 9,000 patients determined that tumescent liposuction with local anesthesia is considered very safe in the hands of an experienced surgeon.2
We also offer the Pro-Nox™ system, which uses a 50/50 combination of inhaled oxygen and nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to provide fast-acting pain relief. This system is safe, fast acting, and self-administered, with relatively low side-effects, and complements and enhances the effects of local anesthetics. The patient only takes a breath of the gas when needed allowing complete control over their analgesic reaction. The Pro-Nox™ takes effect in seconds and offers immediate relief from pain and anxiety. Once the procedure is complete, the effects wear off in minutes, allowing the patient to go about his or her day without downtime.
Comparing Local and General Anesthesia: Which Is Right for You?
There are several factors to consider when choosing between general and local anesthesia:
- Potential side effects: Local anesthesia is known to produce fewer systemic side effects and avoid the deeper sedation risks associated with general anesthesia.
- Comfort level: Some patients prefer to be asleep during surgery, whereas others feel more at ease staying awake and avoiding the grogginess or nausea that can follow general anesthesia.
- Extent of the procedure: For small to moderate areas, local anesthesia may be ideal. For larger-volume liposuction or multi-area treatment, general anesthesia may be recommended.
- Recovery experience: Patients who undergo liposuction under local anesthesia may recover more quickly, with less downtime and fewer restrictions immediately after surgery.
- Cost: Procedures performed under local anesthesia may also result in lower overall costs due to the elimination of anesthesia fees and operating room expenses.
