What is involved in breast reduction surgery?
The exact technique used to reduce the breasts depends on factors such as the amount of reduction desired and the patient and surgeon’s personal preferences.
In most cases, the incisions are created on the breasts and excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed. The remaining tissue is lifted and shaped. The nipples are relocated higher on the breasts and the areolas can be reduced in size, if desired. The incisions are then brought together to reshape the size of the breast into one that is less droopy and more aesthetically pleasing.
Who is a good candidate for breast reduction?
Suitable candidates for breast reduction are generally women with large, heavy breasts that have finished growing. Candidates typically experience physical effects due to the size and weight of the breasts, including but not limited to back, neck and shoulder pain; rashes, infections or ulcers in the skin underneath the breasts; and difficulty running, exercising and buying clothing that fits. Women may have low self-esteem and/or feelings of anxiety or depression linked to poor body image.
How long does it take to recover from breast reduction?
The initial recovery lasts around two weeks, during which patients usually have bruising, swelling and slight discomfort. Most resume work or school about one or two weeks after surgery. Patients must avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for four to six weeks or more.
Can my breasts increase in size after surgery?
It is possible for the breasts to grow in size after surgery. Usually, this is linked to weight fluctuations or changes in hormones, such as during pregnancy or menopause or when taking birth control pills.
Can my breasts/nipples lose sensitivity from surgery?
Some patients lose sensitivity in their breasts and nipples after surgery, while others gain sensitivity. There is no surefire way to determine how surgery will affect sensitivity. Regardless, permanent loss of sensation is very unusual and any alterations in nipple sensitivity is usually temporary.
How much does breast reduction cost?
Breast reduction cost depends on factors such as the specific plan of treatment, the surgeon’s experience and their geographical location.
Does insurance cover breast reduction?
Some insurance plans cover part or all of a breast reduction if the physical effects of the breasts are well-documented and a certain amount of tissue is removed. Pre-authorization is required.
