Correcting Breast Asymmetry with Surgery
No woman’s breasts are identical. In many cases, the differences in size or shape are hardly noticeable. However, to some women the asymmetry is not only noticeable but upsetting. If you have uneven breasts, you may feel extremely self-conscious to the point where you don’t like going out in public or wearing certain styles of clothing because of the asymmetry.

Augmenting One Breast
Fixing breast asymmetry is a very personalized procedure, based on the specific needs and goals of the individual patient. Some women with mismatched breasts decide that they want to augment the smaller breast so it matches the larger breast. This usually involves placing a saline or silicone breast implant in the smaller breast, while the larger breast is left alone.
In a small number of cases where the smaller breast is very flat, the plastic surgeon may need to take a staged approach, using a device called a tissue expander to gradually stretch the breast skin and tissue to prepare it for the insertion of the breast implant.
Reducing One Breast
Other women with asymmetrical breasts decide they want to reduce the larger breast so it matches the smaller breast. This entails removing breast tissue, fat and skin from the larger breast and leaving the smaller breast as is.
Lifting One Breast
Sometimes the more noticeable problem isn’t so much size as it is shape or position. In cases where one breast droops significantly, the plastic surgeon can use breast lift techniques to reposition it higher on the chest to match the perkier breast. The nipple(s) can be relocated as needed so they rest at the same height after surgery.
Sometimes, only one breast is augmented or reduced, but both breasts are lifted to create more youthful looking results.
