What is Chin Augmentation?

Also known as “genioplasty,” chin augmentation refers to the cosmetic enhancement of the chin through the placement of implants or surgical alteration of the chin bone. In the hands of an experienced plastic or craniofacial surgeon, the procedure can:

Enlarge an especially diminutive chin
Correct a crooked or misshapen chin
Improve the definition of the jawline
Reduce the appearance of a chin cleft, jowls, or a double chin (particularly when additional treatments, such as liposuction, are incorporated)

Am I a Good Candidate for Chin Augmentation?

The typical chin augmentation candidate is unsatisfied with the appearance of their chin. Often, they find that their chin does not compliment the rest of their facial features or disrupts their overall aesthetic. A weak or misshapen chin can sometimes be the source of embarrassment or self-consciousness. This is especially true of men, as a strong, robust jawline is traditionally associated with masculinity. Furthermore, candidates for chin augmentation should be in relatively good health and have realistic expectations for the outcome of surgery. If you are a tobacco smoker, be prepared to refrain from smoking directly before and after the procedure. Candidates must also be able to stop drinking alcohol for at least two days before surgery.

How Does Chin Augmentation Work?

Chin augmentation with implants is typically performed in an outpatient setting with anesthesia. To begin the procedure, Dr. Ereso will make a small incision under the chin. He will then create a pocket to facilitate placement of the implant in front of the jaw bone. The surgery is generally completed in under an hour.

For a more comprehensive enhancement of the facial structure, many patients choose to undergo additional procedures, such as rhinoplasty, alongside their chin augmentation. Rhinoplasty in particular can work in tandem with chin augmentation to create a more balanced, proportionate profile.

What is Chin Augmentation Recovery Like?

Chin augmentation generally does not warrant a lengthy recovery and most patients are able to return to regular activities within a week. While side effects such as bruising and soreness are common, they are usually mild and can often be controlled with ice or over-the-counter medications. Additionally, moderate to significant swelling can be expected for the first few months as your body adapts to the implant.

How Long Does It Take to See Chin Implant Results?

Because it can take a few months for residual swelling to fade, the full results of your chin augmentation may not be immediately apparent; however, the effects of chin augmentation tend to be very long-lasting. In some cases, the results are permanent. Very rarely, the implant will shift and require a revisional procedure.
