Gynecomastia Surgery at a Glance

  • Sedation: General anesthesia
  • Procedure Length: Approximately two hours
  • Potential Benefits: A firmer, flatter, more masculine-looking chest contour
  • Potential Risks: Swelling, bleeding, and other risks associated with anesthesia*
  • Cost: $8,000

Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for “women-like breasts.” Though this oddly-named condition is rarely talked about, it is actually quite common, affecting an estimated 40 to 60% of men. It is usually present in both breasts, but one breast may be affected more than the other (or, less commonly, only one breast may be affected).

For men with gynecomastia who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The male breast reduction procedure can involve the removal of fat, glandular tissue, and – in extreme cases – excess skin from the breasts, often resulting in a flatter, firmer, and better-contoured chest. Some patients may also experience physical relief, as excessive breast tissue can cause skin chafing, irritation, and even infection. What Causes Gynecomastia?

It is not entirely known what causes gynecomastia. Doctors believe the condition may be caused by any of the following:

  • Hormonal imbalance resulting in excess female hormones
  • Certain medical conditions such as liver failure and malnutrition
  • Use of anabolic steroids
  • Medications used to treat certain medical conditions
  • Drug or alcohol use

Are You A Good Male Breast Reduction Candidate?

In most cases, surgery to correct gynecomastia can be performed on healthy, emotionally stable men of any age. The best candidates for surgery have firm, elastic skin that will reshape to the body’s new contours. Surgery may be discouraged for obese men or for overweight men who have not first attempted to correct the problem with exercise or weight loss; those with an overabundance of fatty rather than glandular breast tissue are often suffering from pseudogynecomastia rather than traditional gynecomastia.*

Additionally, individuals who drink alcoholic beverages in excess or smoke marijuana are usually not considered good candidates for surgery. These drugs, along with anabolic steroids, may cause gynecomastia. Therefore, patients are first directed to stop the use of these drugs to see if the breast fullness will diminish before surgery is considered an option.

If you feel you are a good candidate for the surgical treatment of gynecomastia, contact our Mountain View plastic surgeon.

What Does the Gynecomastia Consultation Entail?

A personal consultation is the first step. Dr. Ereso will assess your physical and emotional health and discuss your specific cosmetic goals for surgery.

You should arrive at the consultation prepared to provide complete information about:

  • Previous surgeries
  • Past and present medical conditions
  • Treatments you have received
  • Any previous diagnostic laboratory or imaging studies looking for a cause of your gynecomastia

Medications that you are currently or have previously been prescribed, including nutritional supplements and herbal remedies

What Does the Male Breast Reduction Procedure Involve?

As the male breast ages, usually the fatty component increases and the glandular component decreases. This fact has helped to make ultrasound-assisted liposuction the mainstay of modern gynecomastia surgery. After ultrasonic or standard liposuction has been completed, any remaining glandular tissue can typically be removed by placing a small incision around the lower edge of the nipple-areolar complex. Combining sophisticated liposuction techniques and excisional surgery as necessary has resulted in inconspicuous scars and outstanding improvement in producing natural appearing male shaped breast contours.

It should be noted that adolescent and young men who have gynecomastia surgery usually have a significant glandular component, making sculpted excision the main focus of the treatment. Liposuction is often then used to fine-tune the shape of the breasts and chest. When performed by an experienced surgeon, the procedure can produce a natural, pleasing shape. Artistic talent is an important part of plastic surgery, and Dr. Ereso is well known throughout the San Jose Bay Area for artistry.

What Is Male Breast Reduction Recovery Like?

You will likely feel some discomfort for a few days after surgery; however, this discomfort can usually be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon. To help reduce swelling, you will probably be instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for several weeks, and for a few weeks longer to obtain the best result.

Swelling is a common side effect of this procedure. Although the worst of your swelling should dissipate in the first few weeks, it may be three months or more before the final results of your surgery are apparent. Other complications, such as bleeding and infection, may occur, but are rare when the surgery is performed in a professional setting.

Avoid straining, bending, and lifting during the early post-operative period. Dr. Ereso will advise you to avoid sexual activity for one to two weeks and heavy exercise for about three to four weeks. You will be told to stay away from any sport or job that risks a blow to the chest area for at least three to four weeks. In general, it will take about ten days to a month before you are back to all of your normal activities.

What Are the Typical Results of Male Breast Reduction?

Almost immediately, you will likely notice your chest has a firmer and flatter appearance. As swelling and bruising subside, the contours of your chest should continually improve and stabilize. It can take several months for residual swelling to completely resolve.

The results of the procedure are generally significant and permanent. If your expectations are realistic, chances are good that you will be very satisfied with your new look.

Please be aware that although gynecomastia surgery can enhance your appearance and self-confidence, it may not necessarily change your looks to match your ideal. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them frankly with Dr. Ereso.

“The surgery is overall not cheap, but gave me my life and self esteem back three fold. And at that point, no price is too high for a greater quality of life. The results that came post surgery were worth every penny. Dr Ereso is very down to earth, and walks you through every step of the way. I am very satisfied with how my chest looks now and cannot recommended this process enough to any man dealing with gyno.”
- Gabriel T.

Will I Have Noticeable Scarring From My Surgery?

As he does with every surgical procedure, Dr. Ereso will take great care to create your male breast reduction incisions in discreet locations. As the incisions heal and the scars flatten and fade, they should blend in with the natural transitions and creases in the skin. Once totally healed, the scars should be virtually imperceptible.

How Much Does Male Breast Reduction Cost?

The cost of male breast reduction at Alexander Ereso Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics generally starts at $8,000; however, the final number will depend on the circumstances of the individual case. Many factors can influence the cost, including:

  • The surgical approach
  • The size of your breasts
  • The surgeon’s fee
  • Facility fees
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Pre- and post-operative care (e.g., compression garments and prescription medications)

You will receive a personalized quote during your initial consultation with Dr. Ereso. Meanwhile, feel free to explore our financial policy page, where you can find information about paying for your experience at our practice. Please also note that certain candidates may be eligible to finance their care through CareCredit®.
